We are now midway between the Sebring Race (see Update#3) and the Heart of the South 200. I am back on the CompuTrainer (CT), and Coach Kevin is trying to urge some hill-climbing strength out of the legs. This next race is held on Saturday, April 4, in Birmingham, AL. It’s actually a bit less than 200 miles (197), but it has 1.0 Difficulty Points which tells me that there is a lot of climbing, in this case, over 10,000 feet. I thought you might be interested in the chart of a couple of strengthening sessions on the CT.

These are 6 minute sessions where I pedal with increasing power each time … the purple line is power, the red line is heart rate.

These are 40 second spurts of very hard pedaling … 10 of them. I generate about 400 watts each time, and the heart rate shows it!!
Fundraising efforts continue to produce fruit, and as you can see, are up to $12 per point. I have a major presentation to the South Western Medical Group in Berrien Springs, MI. This is a group which has many like-minded missionary doctors, some of which have already expressed an interest in sponsorship. I think after the next race, I’ll begin contacting the media to try to get this effort in front of the people in Michiana. Tough economic times means that sponsorship recruitment is going to be a season-long, consistent effort, much like training on the bike.
Linda and I will be traveling to Pennsylvania for a couple of weeks. Yes, the bike goes along, perhaps for some rides on asphalt (unlikely: it’s snowing there now!). I will have the CT, but sans the fancy readouts or scenery, just the real time numbers on a handlebar unit. Then it’s back home for a week of intense workouts before the travel and recovery week before the next race.
